| The Loggerhead sea turtle arrives on our Islands from the middle of May until the middle of August. The female will crawl to the beach at night in search of just the right place to make her nest. If she finds dry land and is not disturbed, she will dig a hole with her back flipper about 8 inches across and 18 inches deep. She will lay an average of 120 eggs about the size of ping pong balls. When she is finished she will conceal the nest by throwing sand all over the nest and make her way back to the ocean, only to repeat this about twice more during the season. She will never return to attend to the hatchlings which will hatch in roughly 60 days. The baby turtles will hatch in the evening when there are fewer predators around and travel in mass to the ocean. The Loggerhead turtle is the most commonly found sea turtle in South carolina. This reddish brown turtle is named for its large head which may measure 10 inches wide. It is estimated that loggerhead turtles reach maturity between 20 and 30 years of age and have a maximum reproductive lifespan of 30 years. An estimated 14,000 female Loggerheads nest in the southeast US annually and the adult turtle weights between 200 and 350 pounds.
